Curriculum
The International Baccalaureate OrganisationThe International Baccalaureate Organisation, a pioneer in international education, is a non-profit educational foundation whose headquarters are located in Switzerland and in the United Kingdom. The IB Diploma, established in 1968, was designed originally as a comprehensive curriculum for the final two years of secondary school which could be administered in any country and which would be accepted by universities throughout the world. Since this time it has increased in popularity as an internationally benchmarked pre-university qualification highly respected by the world’s top universities. Programme Auckland International College is a New Zealand Ministry of Education registered private secondary school offering the NZQA approved IB Diploma in Years 12 and 13, and the Preparation Year Programme for IB Diploma in Year 11. The Preparation Year programme for the IB Diploma ensures that students will meet the standard required to study subjects from all six subject groups of the Diploma. It also teaches the skills needed for the Diploma Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Action and Community Service programme. It provides preparation for all of the subjects offered in the IB Diploma and therefore students are able to make informed decisions when they select their subjects for the Diploma itself the following year. IB Diploma – Years 12 and 13
Auckland International College selected as its first choice of curriculum one of world repute as an internationally benchmarked qualification, the IB Diploma. Through a rigorous authorisation process conducted by the IBO, Auckland International College is an IB World School. Detailed information about the IBO, its programmes and IB World Schools can be found on www.ibo.org Auckland International College teaches the same IB Diploma curriculum as other IB World schools. At the end of the two year programme students sit the same examinations as students in other IB Diploma schools. These examinations are marked internationally by external examiners appointed by the IBO. A smaller part of student work is assessed internally. For such internally assessed components IBO examiners check the assessment to ensure that the IBO standards are consistently applied. The IBO’s insistence on consistency and quality control has earned the IB Diploma an international reputation of respect as a pre-university qualification of integrity. Whenever possible, subjects are taught from an international perspective. Students select from six subject categories: first language; second or foreign language; individuals and societies; experimental sciences; mathematics and computer science; the arts. Students select three subjects at standard level and three subjects at higher level. At the centre of the programme, students fulfil the following three additional requirements in addition to their six subjects: Theory of Knowledge; Extended Essay; Creativity, Action and Service. Auckland International College offers the following IB Diploma subjects: First Language This literature course allows students to maintain strong ties to their own cultures while giving them an international perspective through studying, in their first language, literature from around the world. Second Language The acquisition of a second language carries great importance to the IB Diploma programme. Auckland International College offers a choice of French, Chinese, Japanese or English as a foreign language. These languages are taught by native speakers and teachers who have studied the language in the host country. Individuals and Societies Students select one of Economics, History or Geography. Experimental Sciences The sciences offered in this category are Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Mathematics and Computer Science A choice of Mathematics courses are available depending on the ability of the student. The Arts Visual Arts or a second subject from one of the categories above. Theory of Knowledge This course challenges students to think and debate about the nature of knowledge – to reflect critically on how they know what they believe to be facts or truth. The Extended Essay Students, under the guidance of a teacher, carry out independent research in an area of interest and present it in a 4,000 word essay. This provides excellent preparation in the techniques required for conducting research at university level. Creativity, Action and Service Students undertake projects of benefit to others and discover the intrinsic personal satisfaction of helping others in the local as well as international community. Every year AIC graduates receive offers from the world"s top ten universities, including Oxbridge and Ivy League.
