Mission Statement
At Rome International School our mission is to provide a nurturing environment, in which children of all nationalities and faiths can explore and respect their own and each other’s cultural and religious heritage. We aspire to equip our students with the skills needed to become life-long learners, so that every child is able to realise their unique gifts and talents and achieve their full potential. As educators, we aim to guide our children in the process of ‘learning to learn’, facilitating their development into inquisitive, active and open-minded students, capable of working independently and in a spirit of harmony and co-operation alongside others. We believe that such an education is needed to meet the challenges of the future and will produce individuals who are self-confident, resourceful and enterprising.
Curriculum
The New Curriculum from Transition to Grade 13 Until this year RIS has followed the English school system with adaptations to incorporate an international perspective. RIS has now chosen to link with what we believe is the most prestigious of all educational systems, the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). We are undergoing a gradual transition away from the English National Curriculum towards the programmes offered by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). Initially this transition will see the introduction of the IB Primary Years Programme in our Elementary School from 2009. As part of the exciting growth of our new High School we intend to offer our first IB Diploma programme from September 2009. We are currently in the process of attaining authorisation from the IBO to become a certified Diploma institution and anticipate that this process will be completed by the Spring/Summer of 2009. Once these two elements of the IBO curriculum are in place in the Elementary and High Schools, the implementation of the IB Middle Years Programme is intended to provide a cohesive programme of study from entry into the Kindergarten to graduation from the High School at eighteen years old. To ensure that our current Middle and High School students have a continuity of academic progression, we will continue to follow the British National Curriculum up to Grade 11 in 2012. From this point we intend that our students will follow the IB Middle Years Programme from Grades 7 to 11 as a preparation for the IB Diploma in Grades 12 and 13. The transition from the British National Curriculum to the IBO programmes will be a gradual one with newly-appointed expert programme co-ordinators (PYP, MYP and IB Diploma) already working with our teachers. Staff training is already in progress, in line with a specifically designed and timetabled instruction programme and over the next years teachers will be attending courses and visiting other IB schools in Italy and abroad. New teaching methods will therefore be introduced into our curriculum this year and, to a greater extent, from September 2008.This current school year is intended to provide the on-going training of staff and a gradual introduction of some of the IBO modules in some lessons in order to help the students become familiar with the new methods.
